The Downtown Fiction
Best I Never Had EP
Photo Finish Records
Remember when you saw American Pie (the first one) and She’s All That, and Bring It On, and any other teen movie that was really popular at one time or another? The Downtown Fiction remembers all of those movies, and may have just written the soundtrack to the next big teen movie. From driving anthems to high-school ballads, The Downtown Fiction, consisting of Cameron Leahy, Eric Jones, and David Pavluk, are bringing back pop rock to where it should be with their new EP “Best I Never Had”.
The EP starts out with the title track “Best I Never Had”. The verses feature Leahy’s smooth effortless vocals over a tight-knit unit of instruments, breaking into a bittersweet chorus about regret. As the EP pushes on, the next song is “Oceans Between Us”, and this is where the EP really starts to get going. The melody in the verses is as infectious as H1N1 without all the bad stuff, and stylistically is very reminiscent of early All American Rejects. This could be a huge song for them.
The third track, “I Just Wanna Run” is another song that will help make this band huge. The production on this track really shines as producer Stacy Jones (American Hi-Fi, Meg & Dia) really brings out the best in the band. ”Take Me Home” sounds like it came straight out of the late 90′s early 00′s, possibly from a scene in a movie where the lead girl is driving with her best friends, and they are all really happy with the wind blowing in their hair…end scene.
“You Were Wrong” starts off sounding like a Goo Goo Dolls song. Once again, TDF brings out the cavity inducing melodies, and the bittersweet pop rock sound that no band for a few years now has really been able to capture. The final song on the EP, “Where Dreams Go To Die” is the high-school ballad. Cheesy? Yes. Executed well? Definitely. Leahy’s falsetto fits perfectly, and the instrumentation behind the vocals may be a little cliché but it is fitting.
Tyson Ritter and company, step aside, The Downtown Fiction is taking your throne as alt-pop rock kings of the world. Movie producers, start kicking out those teen movies that we are all nostalgic over. And last but not least, Photo Finish Records, well done on signing this band, now it’s just time to make everyone else realize how far these guys are going to go.

Wow. Thank you so much for writing such an amazing review for “Best I Never Had”. I have been supporting these boys since they first started their journey. They are the most deserving band. I know for a fact these boys will take music to a new level. I am honestly more than proud. They’re 3 of the most incredible guys I know, and everything they do, is spectacular. You can’t go wrong with TDF. I am so happy that everyone feels the same love & passion I feel for them. It’s truly amazing<3
THANK YOU AGAIN!
Yeah, I remember back when they added me on myspace, and being that I was looking for some new music, and was trying to give every band that added me a fair chance (I’ve been in bands, and I know how important it is), and I was blown away at how phenomenal the music was.
Glad you liked the review.
Totally agree!
I just adore their music soooo much!
They are incredible!
These guys are amazing. Their music is so catchy and well written, and not to mention their so friendly with their fans. As soon as I heard them when they added me on myspace, I was hooked. Now I’m the leader of their PA Street Team (www.myspace.com/officialpatdfst).
They deserve alot of recognition and I’m so proud of them
I’ve supported them from the beginning and will continue to through their career.
