[REVIEW] FIGHT FAIR- California Kicks
The modern day Beach Boys release their debut album hot on the heels of their first Warped Tour appearance and it’s…okay. Now, I’m not hating, these guys know a catchy sound, undoubtedly, however, whenever I listen to them, I feel like Surfin’ USA is going to be the next track to come on. It’s like something out of Grease. And don’t get me wrong, if that’s you’re thing, then you’re going to love this.
The music is certainly done in a creative and entertaining manner, bringing the reminiscent sounds of the sixtes back to the airwaves, which is always as much fun as it is refreshing, and if you sense a “but” coming on, you’re right. The “But” is that Fight Fair just tries a bit too hard, and it could be that they were going for a campy sound, but it just didn’t float quite right with me. The album doesn’t really pick up until midway through with the titular track, “California Kicks” which is probably the closest thing to pop-punk that you’ll get on the album, along with “Party Girl” and the least surfer-bum track they have.
As much on the fence as I am with this CD, I’d say it’s still worth a listen. Most of the songs sound pretty similar, but they’re fun, nonetheless. If you can get a good deal on the album, then go for it, if you’re friend has a copy, give a listen and decide for yourself, because it’s definitely not for everyone. 2.5 out of 5
