[REVIEW] Bury Your Dead – Mosh ‘N’ Roll

Bury Your Dead’s new album, Mosh ‘N’ Roll, dispels any lingering doubts you’ve had since the departure of Bruso.

The first number off of this angry little album is, “Slaughterhouse-Five.” This song sounds like it could’ve been an unreleased bonus track off of Beauty And The Breakdown. Lyrics like, “Night after fucking night, knife at my throat. Endless fucking tears for you, I’ve lost all hope” only provides a small example of what is about to come. This is one of the angrier Bury Your Dead songs that exists, in my opinion.

Next up is, “Nothing Is Lost Save Honor.” The song retains the same brutal rawness from the previous song.

“Bluebeard” is the third track on Mosh ‘N’ Roll. This song has some very interesting lyrics in it. Listen closely!

My favorite songs off of this album would definitely be “Sirens Of Titan” and “Deadeye Dick.” “Sirens Of Titan” begins with an echoey melodic guitar part before Bruso’s crushing lyric “I SWEAR TO END THIS…” hits you in the face over the guitar part, kicking off one helluva song. “Deadeye Dick” is another song that hits you in the face. I don’t know what in particular I like about this song but, I love it.

Track 8 is titled, “Mother Night.”  The song has one of the heavier “chug-riffs” in the album. You’re nodding your head along with the beat before you know it. This is another song that features awesome lyrics, ex. “The poison apple doesn’t fall far from the fucking tree, until the peril is rotten. So you’ll pickup and leave. How could you dig up your rules so fucking easily?” Awesome!

The second to last song on Mosh ‘N’ Roll is “Jailbird.” This one is a continuation of the heavy-train.

The last track on this album is a fairly reworked version of “Mosh ‘N’ Roll/Losing It.” Drummer Mark Castillo recorded this cd as his last with the band. What’s interesting is why he chose to simplify the drums for this song. My guess would be to bring something fresh to the table. Regardless, you will be screaming “BURY YOUR FUCKING DEAD” by the end of this song at the top of your lungs. It’s just unavoidable.

Man oh MAN, where to even begin. The first time that I listened to this record the entire way through, I ended up on the floor of my living room with bloody knuckles and holes crudely punched in the walls. This is by far the heaviest thing that has graced my eardrums in a LONG time. Sure, with the exception of a few songs, the band may not have chosen to really go out of their way to truly make each song sound different but let’s be honest with ourselves, who cares? Mat Bruso is back in Bury Your Dead and they have dropped that god awful nu-metal sound that plagued the band when they were fronted by Myke Terry. A know a few people that provided gang vocals in this cd. The night that he got back from dropping vocals, I asked him what the new album sounded like. He replied that they had gone back to the sound that was prevalent during Cover Your Tracks. I couldn’t believe what I was reading. Turns out, he was right! Mosh ‘N’ Roll almost makes up for their self-titled album back in 2008.

In case you aren’t a big Kurt Vonnegut fan, every song on this record, with the exception of the title track, are named after Kurt Vonnegut books.

Great job boys, keep it up! Oh yeah, one more thing…

BURY YOUR FUCKING DEAD!
