[Review] Breathe Carolina-Hell Is What You Make It

Denver boys, Breathe Carolina are at it with again with their new album titled, Hell Is What You Make It, produced by Kirk Patrick (Plain White T’s, Neon Trees) and Matt Squire (3OH!3, All Time Low). This album stops at nothing to keep you on your feet!

The album begins with a soft song titled, “An Introduction” that is exactly what the title dictates, an introduction. It gradually putts together the structure for the next song with a guitar riff that smoothly transitions you into the next track, “Wolly,” which could be mistaken for an A Day To Remember song. It alternates into a pumping dance beat while alternating back and forth between breakdowns and delivers a beat that you would find at a rave.

Next up, is their single “Blackout,” which is nothing short of what you’d expect to hear from Breathe Carolina. With a catchy chorus that is hard not to sing along to, and a beat that even has MY feet tapping, you’ll be tempted to not press replay once the song is over!

The album then slows down a bit with the tracks “Edge of Heaven” and “Last Night (Vegas),” which seem to give you time to catch up and take in the first couple songs. It may just be me but, I can’t help but think of the movie, “The Hangover” when I listen to this song, as he struggles to remember what they might have done previous night and repeat it. The pace of the album begins to pick back up again with “Sweat It Out.” The song itself gives you a subtle suggestion as what you should be doing… , The beat then drops and Kyle’s crisp, high-ranged screams lash out, followed by the soothing of David’s melodies, which are sure to keep your head bobbing. (Just as a heads up, you might think that your CD is skipping when the song first starts but I assure you, it’s not!)

“Get Off Easy” could almost be mistaken for dubstep, as it opens up and then transitions into something you’d most likely hear on the dance floor. The energy plateaus with the next song titled, “Waiting.” This song is accomodated by a heavy bass and synthy, twangy sounds, which keep the song sharp and will without a doubt, keep you on your feet.

As the album comes to a close, a new element is introduced with the track “Laurens Song,” which is eased in by chords drifting in from an acoustic guitar, accompanied by synth, while at the same time retaining elements from the second track.

If you’ve been a fan of Breathe Carolina, you’ll remain a fan, and for all those who haven’t listened to, or didn’t like them before this album, Hell is What You Make It may be the catalyst that makes you a new fan!
